The Keg Spirit Foundation

The Keg Spirit Foundation was established in 2001 to commemorate The Keg’s 30th anniversary and its history of charitable giving. The creation of the Foundation provided a vehicle to consolidate existing charitable activities while focusing on new ways to give back to local Keg communities.

While the Foundation concentrates on supporting charities that focus on the development of youth, its specific goal is to recognize organizations that mirror the mentorship that The Keg Steakhouse + Bar has provided to so many young people. To date, The Keg Spirit Foundation has raised more than $11 million for over 300 charities across North America.

Funding for The Keg Spirit Foundation is raised through a variety of ways including: company-wide promotions, the sale of Keg branded products at retailers across Canada, and local store fundraising initiatives.

Since the Foundation was established, there have been many inspiring stories of Keggers making a difference by giving their time, energy, and enthusiasm to worthwhile causes. One of those stories is the Spirit Ride that happened in 2014. Inspired by three Keggers who cycled across Canada in 2006 to raise funds for The Keg Spirit Foundation, and by our president, David Aisenstat, who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2010 to do the same, Keg franchisee Rob Haberman hit the road raising funds and awareness with a 1,132-kilometre ride starting from our Lethbridge, Alberta location and finishing up at The Keg in Whistler, B.C. The ride raised over $120,000 with the support of Keg staff, guests, suppliers, and franchisees.

Our support goes beyond dollars. Keg employees are encouraged to donate their time and energy to local initiatives that benefit their communities. Whether they are participating in local charity walks, filling the storerooms of emergency shelters, or providing special dinners for families in need, Keg staff come together in a variety of ways to help their communities.

Charities Supported

Since 2001, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been one of the largest beneficiaries of grants from The Keg Spirit Foundation. Their commitment to impacting children’s lives through mentoring, as well as a shared presence within many of the same communities has made BBBS a natural fit with our Foundation.

To date, The Keg Spirit Foundation has contributed more than $1.8 million to BBBS of Canada. Local BBBS chapters in all of our U.S. markets have also received annual support since our inception.

The Foundation’s Chairman’s Award is a celebration of those who are at the heart of the company — our staff. The award recognizes four Keg employees who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to their communities. Recognized at The Keg’s senior manager conferences, each winner directs $5,000 to the charity of their choice through The Keg Spirit Foundation. Over the years, this program has empowered Keg staff to direct more than $180,000 in Canada, and $55,000 in the U.S. to charities that they support.

Other national charities that have been supported include WE Charity, the Ladybug Foundation Education Program, Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Grants have been issued to more than 300 local charities. For an up-to-date listing of charities supported, please contact us.

Apply for a grant

The Keg Spirit Foundation will consider funding for both new and established projects based on the following criteria:

  • The organization must hold, in good standing, a current charity registration number.
  • The project must relate to children or youth in some way.
  • The program should contain a mentoring component.

When funding allows (the majority of funding goes to our larger partnerships each year), The Keg Spirit Foundation will make grants to successful applicants. Grants are typically in the range of $2,000 to $5,000. The application process consists of two-stages: an initial Letter of Interest, which if invited, is followed by a full proposal.

The initial Letter of Interest must be limited to one page and should include:

  • A description of the organization and indication of competence in the area of this proposal.
  • An outline of the project including: a) Who it will benefit b) Design of the project c) Outcomes expected.
  • A brief (2 or 3 lines) overview of your budget, income sources, and expenses for this project.

Letters of Interest may be submitted throughout the calendar year and are reviewed on an ongoing basis. If an organization is chosen for further consideration, they will be invited to submit a full proposal that will consist of a more detailed application. Please note that funding decisions are traditionally made in the first quarter of the year based on the prior year’s proposals.

The Keg Spirit Foundation does not award grants to:

  • Individuals
  • Projects outside of our market areas
  • Reduction of deficits
  • Religious or political causes
  • Sponsorships
  • Conferences
  • Memberships

All applications are to be emailed or sent to The Keg Spirit Foundation at the address below. Please note that we request complete written information, as we will evaluate all proposals based on the information provided. Respectfully, we request that correspondence be via mail or email.
